Thank you for watching ! Introducing the Gion Festival held in Kyoto in July. The Gion Festival is one of the three major festivals in Japan. The Gion Matsuri is a festival of Yasaka Shrine and is held for one month in July. The festival is especially lively during the two days of July 17 (Saki-matsuri), when the portable shrine carrying the Yasaka Shrine deity is welcomed into town, and July 24 (Ato-matsuri), when the shrine returns the portable shrine to the shrine. It originated in the 9th century as a Shinto ritual to pray for the disappearance of the epidemic that spread in Kyoto. Its appearance, which seems to have escaped from a picture scroll, is called a "moving museum" and has been registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
