A Spring Trip to Muriwai Gannet Colony

In late October, we visited the Gannet Colony at Muriwai Beach, Auckland, New Zealand. This place fascinates me deeply. From August to March each year, around 1,200 pairs of gannets gather at Ōtakamiro Point in Muriwai Regional Park to breed, their nests packed tightly on the rugged headland and nearby sea stacks. With sweeping ocean views and accessible clifftop platforms, it’s one of the best places in New Zealand to witness these striking seabirds up close as they soar, dive, and raise their chicks in a bustling, wind-swept colony.
