On this day in 1997, Rav Sholom Schwadron passed away. Born in 1912 in Jerusalem’s Beis Yisrael neighborhood, R’ Shalom became renowned as the "Maggid of Jerusalem" for his unparalleled oratory skills and inspirational teachings. Orphaned at a young age and raised in poverty, his formative years in the Diskin orphanage shaped his sensitivity to others’ struggles. A standout student at the Chevron Yeshivah, he later married Leah Auerbach, sister of he famed Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach. Rav Sholom dedicated himself to publishing the works of his grandfather, the Maharsham, whom he was named for, as well as his teachers, Rav Eliyahu Lopian and Rav Leib Chasman. Rav Sholom’s Friday night lectures at Zichron Moshe in Jerusalem became legendary, captivating audiences with his masterful blend of halacha, parshah, and fiery mussar. Known for his engaging delivery, humor, and profound insights, he was a natural public speaker who could move listeners across all levels of engagement. Beyond these speeches, Rav Sholom delivered daily talmud classes, served as a Dean of Students, and taught at the Mekor Chaim Yeshivah. He also advocated for religious education and infrastructure for immigrant communities, further solidifying his role as a leader in the Jewish world. Rav Sholom’s relationship with the Krohn family began after Rav Avraham Zeleg Krohn, father of Rav Paysach, heard a recording of one of Rav Sholom’s fiery talks. Deeply moved, he insisted that Rav Sholom stay in his home when visiting New York, and the two became the best of friends. This relationship eventually led to the creation of the Artscroll Maggid series by Rabbi Paysach Krohn, which brought Rav Sholom’s teachings and stories to a global audience. By the time he left this world, on this day, Rab Shalom was known as the "Maggid of Klal Yisrael." Order the Today In Jewish History book: https://www.rabbilandis.com/today-in-...
