Kabila's preferred successor, Shadary, casts vote

(30 Dec 2018) Presidential candidate and former interior minister Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary cast his vote in the Democratic Republic of Congo's election on Sunday. Shadari, who is outgoing President Joseph Kabila's preferred successor, called for peaceful elections, adding that he was confident that "that from tonight I will already be the president of the republic". Shadary is under sanctions from the European Union and is being challenged by two main opposition candidates, Martin Fayulu and Felix Tshisekedi. The election could bring the troubled country's first peaceful, democratic transfer of power. Some unrest is feared in the election after a last-minute decision to bar an estimated one million people from voting because of a deadly Ebola virus outbreak in the country's east. The decision has been widely criticised as threatening the credibility of the election.
