For over 300 years, British sailors enjoyed the privilege of drinking rum each and every day. This royal rum ration was called a “tot.” As the centuries passed, the tot was responsible for one of the world’s first cocktails: grog. On July 31, 1970 (please excuse my error in the video), the royal rum ration was officially retired from service in what became known as Black Tot Day. However, that was not the end of the story. The rum used for blending sat in stone flagons in a dockyard for decades until Sukhinder Singh purchased all of the liquid and created the rum brand Black Tot. The bottle in this video, Black Tot Last Consignment, is a piece of liquid history. This is a blend of rums from the 1950s and 1960s that British naval sailors would have enjoyed each and every day for their tots. What was the toast said for each and every tot? Bosun’s call: “Up Spirits!” Response from Sailors: “Stand fast, the Holy Ghost!” #rum #rums #history #historyfact #historyfacts #navalhistory #british #royalnavy #royal #historychannel #historybuff #rumreview #rumlover #navyrum #navy #royal #naval #militaryhistory #education #educational #learning #educationalvideo #educationalvideos 00:00 Introduction 00:10 The Daily Rum Ration 01:07 Live at Sea Sucks 01:31 Press Gangs 02:20 Drunk On Duty 02:51 Admiral Vernon & Grog 03:41 The 1800s & Rum Blending 04:55 The End of The Rum Ration 05:17 Black Tot Rum 05:51 The Last Consignment
