[TALK 1] What is out there? - Tim Stevens, Kim Lui and Cat Franco

Bioinformatics Speaker: Tim Stevens, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK Next Generation Sequencing Speaker: Kim Liu, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK Proteomics Speaker: Cat Franco, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK In this video, Tim explains the range of bioinformatical information that is available in databases from primary sequences, through structure, function, to interactions and pathways. He shows how which questions can be answered by querying different databases. He talks about his own research on genes with unknown function. Next Kim outlines how next generation sequencing works with an emphasis on the workflows involved using the Illumina sequencer. Kim presents the current groups at the LMB that are utilising next generation sequencing techniques in different types of analyses. And lastly, he considers the availability of other types of sequencing. Cat gives an overview of what mass spectrometry is. She discusses how different sample types need particular workflows. She discusses how purified proteins and complexes can be identified. For whole cells and tissues, she explains how whole proteomes can be analysed and changes in global protein phosphorylation can also be monitored. To help in data analysis bioinformatic support can also be given. The Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility is headed by Cat Franco.
