In this video I'm going to attempt to install Fedora 33 workstation Linux on the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 with the AMD Threadripper Pro 3995WX CPU! Unfortunately, the installation process was a bit frustrating due to a Linux driver issue with the onboard Aquantia 10G network controller. First, I tried updating the Aquantia firmware in Windows 10, but that did not resolve the problem. I eventually had to install a add-on PCIe network card to workaround this issue. Once Fedora 33 workstation was successfully installed, I ran into other issues with my Blue Yeti USB mic not working and then one of my cameras died! Also, initially, I noticed very high power consumption at idle. Once Fedora 33 workstation was fully installed and updated, the Aquantia 10G network port seems to work normally again. Finally, I install the Nvidia driver for the RTX8000 GPU, but this also required disabling secure boot for it to work. However, once the nvidia driver was loaded, the high power consumption at idle was fixed! So, my conclusion is that the open source nouveau driver doesn't do a good job at power management for the RTX8000. That's pretty much it for this video. In future videos, I'll run some performance benchmarks, and investigate the storage I/O subsystem, so stay tuned if you're interested in the Lenovo ThinkStation P620.
