Hundreds of thousands of people climb Colorado's 14ers annually. Who is most at risk of developing altitude-related illnesses? The answer will likely surprise you. Young, fit endurance athletes--mountaineers, ultra marathoners, triathletes, etc.--are most likely to run into altitude-related health problems precisely because they can bound up mountains quickly. Because they are fit and fast they can gain lots of altitude in a short amount of time, forcing their bodies to adjust to lower air pressure at altitude more quickly than older, slower hikers who take longer to ascend. This is particularly true for fit athletes coming from sea level who immediately seek to run up a 14er. The "Tips and Timelines" video offers suggestions regarding how to give yourself a better chance to acclimatize so that the likelihood of running into altitude-related illnesses is lessened. Every person responds differently to altitude, so listen to your body and heed the advice of your doctor if you have underlying health problems or have had difficulties adjusting to altitude in the past. REALITY. Climbing is inherently dangerous! People die on Colorado 14ers every year. NO GUARANTEE. CFI’s goal is to provide you with education and perspective. Our videos do not address all climbing risks. Viewing the videos does not guarantee your safety! YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! Be fit. Get educated. Be aware. If you choose to climb, you accept and assume the inherent and other risks. You remain responsible for your decisions, your actions and your adventure!
