Welcome back to another video, and this is an update of a 2-parter I did 2 years ago- the top 25 biggest downgrades from the semi final to the grand final in terms of position! Reading this description may be a valuable exercise as it might answer any queries you may have in the comments. This is calculated in a way that scales the 10 qualifying positions of every semi final over the 24-27 finalist positions and calculates the difference from the "expected" place in the final that a semi final qualifier would get. For example, 10th in the semi final to 1st in the grand final would be considered an 100% upgrade, and 1st in the semi to last in the final is an 100% downgrade. Of course, someone's result may change from show to show for a variety of reasons- the biggest factors being a mostly different lineup of more songs of a higher standard, a lot of the time with around double the amount of countries voting, as well as different people viewing/voting on the show. Other factors which may heighten an already large change to the extremes include changes in running order, variations in vocal performance on different days, and of course for lower placing acts, the presence of automatic qualifiers. TIE BREAKS Any tied entries which receive the same percentage change between the semi and final are broken by the percentage change of their points. As you may have seen in the description of the average countries video, my system for calculating this has changed to set the average amount of points received as the midpoint fixed at 50%. I'm not sure whether any of these ties would be different if I simply used the percentage of maximum points method, but if there are any differences to what you expected then that's possibly why. DISCLAIMER This video is simply documenting these changes in position as they are without removing singular factors. For example, if I removed acts from different semi finals or automatic qualifiers, then I'd have to go a step even further and remove all the different voters (or the final jury vote in years with televote-only semis), and even still recalculate jury rankings without these different songs in contention- this would be a video more accurately titled "biggest changes in decision." This video is not that. So if someone is still the highest placing act of their semi in the grand final but hasn't come first, it will still count as a downgrade because of the reason that other acts are in contention. Likewise, if someone is still the lowest of their semi but isn't last in the final because of, say, automatic qualifiers placing below, it still counts as an upgrade for that same reason. I hope you enjoy the video!
