Palm Bay, FL – A stretch of Malabar Road connecting Interstate 95 to Babcock Street will undergo resurfacing work starting this month, with nighttime lane closures expected through summer as the Florida Department of Transportation addresses pavement deterioration along the heavily traveled corridor. Project Details FDOT has contracted Pigott Asphalt and Sitework LLC to resurface State Road 514 (Malabar Road) from west of I-95 to east of Babcock Street. The $1.7 million project includes milling and repaving the roadway surface and reconstructing pedestrian curb ramps to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Work is scheduled to begin in February 2026 and continue through summer 2026. The project carries the Financial Project Identification Number 450729-1. Traffic Impacts Motorists should expect intermittent single lane closures between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. during construction. The posted speed limit of 45 mph will remain in effect throughout the work zone. Construction activity and noise levels may vary throughout different phases of the project. Electronic message boards and additional signage will direct traffic through the work zone. Segment Details The resurfacing work covers the section of Malabar Road between I-95 (Exit 173) and Babcock Street, which serves as a primary east-west connector in Palm Bay. This segment includes commercial areas near the interstate and residential zones as the road approaches Babcock Street. The project is separate from the ongoing $63.3 million I-95 resurfacing project, which includes work on the I-95 ramps at Malabar Road. That interstate project began in March 2025 and is expected to continue through Fall 2026. ADA Compliance Updates In addition to the roadway resurfacing, pedestrian curb ramps along the corridor will be reconstructed to meet current ADA standards. This work addresses accessibility requirements and ensures compliance with federal regulations for pedestrian infrastructure. Project Information FDOT notes that construction schedules may change due to inclement weather or unexpected conditions. Multiple project phases may result in uneven pavement within the project limits, which is a common condition during construction.
