UlsterVintage.com our Ulster Vintage Stationary Here is more information about HISTORIC ARMY HUT at Aghacully Rd A Wartime Legacy This structure is an example of a wartime army hut, originally built during the First or Second World War to serve as rapid, functional accommodation for military use. The most common design, the Nissen hut, was developed in 1916 by Major Peter Nissen. Its distinctive curved roof, made of corrugated iron, allowed it to be quickly assembled and easily transported. These huts were used as barracks, mess halls, storage units, and medical stations—essential to the daily operations of soldiers at war. After the war, many such huts were sold or repurposed. In communities across Britain and Ireland, they found new life as workshops, community centres, farm buildings, or even homes. Today, this surviving hut stands as a rare reminder of the ingenuity, hardship, and resilience of a generation. Its continued presence offers a powerful link to the past and a tribute to the role of ordinary structures in extraordinary times.
