'Sussex by the Sea' (also known as 'A Horse Galloping') is a patriotic song written in 1907 by William Ward-Higgs (1866-1936) often considered to be the unofficial county anthem of Sussex. It became well known throughout Sussex and is regularly sung at celebrations throughout the county. Ward-Higgs was born in Birkenhead and for much of his life worked in London as a solicitor. A native of Lancashire, one of the versions of the tune's origins is that Ward-Higgs grew to love his adopted county so much he produced a marching song in its praise. Another version has Ward-Higgs composing the song especially for the wedding of his sister-in-law Gladys when she became engaged to Captain Roland Waithman of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. In any event Sussex By The Sea is a stirring piece of music performed here by the Grenadier Guards conducted by Lt. Col. Rodney Bashford L.R.A.M, A.R.C.M, P.S.M. The recording comes from a Decca-Eclipse compact disc titled 'Military Band Spectacular', issued in 1995. (844 174-2)
