I'm a Gen X American expat who moved to the United Kingdom, married a British woman, and bought a cottage in the Scottish Highlands. I'm a first-time homeowner in the UK, figuring it all out as I go, doing my best to culturally assimilate and integrate into Scottish culture in the far north of the Highlands. This vlog is my story. Video Chapters: 00:00 -- Intro 01:01 -- Welcome to my 19th Century Scottish Cottage! 02:16 -- Come inside my 19th Century Scottish Cottage 05:16 -- General information about Scotland's geography 06:39 -- Being an American Immigrant in Scotland 08:17 -- Being a Homeowner in Rural Scotland 11:44 -- What can you expect from an episode of The American Highlander? 12:58 -- Just how remote is the Far North of Scotland? 14:51 -- City boy learns to operate a push lawnmower 17:31 -- Outro This video serves as an introduction to The American Highlander channel. Future episodes will get more in-depth on specific topics, but this gives you an idea of what you can expect on this channel. I created The American Highlander because when I was thinking about moving to Scotland, I voraciously consumed as many videos from different channels that I could find, trying to gain as much information as possible about life in the Scottish Highlands, challenges for American expats, scenic places to visit, and so on. It's not just all facts and figures, though; you can get that from ChatGPT or Reddit. This is a personal story, a glimpse into my daily life, and it's designed to hopefully entertain as well as educate. I think The American Highlander will appeal to a few specific groups: a.) People seriously considering (or actively in the process of) moving to the Scottish Highlands, particularly the Far North. b.) People fantasizing about one day moving to the Scottish Highlands -- particularly Americans who want to leave the USA and live in northwestern Europe -- and wanting a vicarious thrill to enjoy. c.) People who want to see someone immigrate into the UK and try to do things the right way: respect the host country's culture and traditions, and try to integrate into society. If you've read this far, please leave comments on the video. That feedback will help me shape future episodes of The American Highlander. I'm a small channel figuring this out as I go, and I can really use the help. For the cinephiles: this video was filmed with three cameras -- a Canon R50 in 35mm with ND filter, my phone, and a GoPro. With the Canon, I shoot 8-bit Rec. 709. No filming in log, no LUTs. Audio captured with wireless Rode lav mics. Background music courtesy of Artlist. Edited in Adobe Premiere. Maybe I'll start up a Patreon or something so I can afford better equipment, but hey, this is what I've got right now, so hopefully you enjoy it.
