Part 2 of Day 4 begins as we enter the Custer Gallatin National Forest, one of the most expansive and diverse national forests in the Northern Rockies. Spanning over 3 million acres across Montana and South Dakota, this forest borders and connects directly to Yellowstone National Park, serving as critical wildlife corridor and backcountry gateway to America’s first national park. The further south we ride toward Capitol Rock, the rougher the road becomes — loose terrain, uneven surfaces, and long stretches of isolation — but the scenery? Absolutely breathtaking. Wide open Montana sky, rolling ridgelines, and that unmistakable Western expanse. We also get trapped outside a rainstorm preventing our passive until we waited it out. From there, we turn toward Spearfish, South Dakota, but the route takes another unexpected turn. Along the way, we stop at what appears to be a strange U.S. Air Force installation near Belle Fourche, SD — featuring a radio tower, mobile equipment, and what looks like a Cold War-era missile defense display. This area was historically tied to the Minuteman Missile Program, part of America’s nuclear deterrence strategy during the Cold War. Western South Dakota was once home to numerous missile silos supporting Ellsworth Air Force Base, making this stretch of land far more strategic than it first appears. As if that wasn’t enough, we also find ourselves at the Geographic Center of the United States (post-Alaska & Hawaii) located just outside Belle Fourche, SD — a small marker that represents the calculated center point of the nation’s 50 states. We don’t quite make it to Spearfish before nightfall, so instead we camp in Belle Fourche, closing out the day with another reminder that adventure rarely follows the original plan. 📍 In This Episode: Riding through Custer Gallatin National Forest Capitol Rock via rough backroads Connection to Yellowstone ecosystem Cold War missile history near Belle Fourche Geographic Center of the U.S. landmark Camping in Belle Fourche, SD Continuing the Black Hills ADV journey This series is shifting from pure riding into something bigger — history, landscape, uncertainty and long miles between towns. #blackhillsadventure #custergallatin #yellowstoneecosystem #advriding #tenere700 #motorcycletravel #bellefourche #geographiccenter #motoadventure #dualsportlife
