THE SONGBIRD: Veronika Kincses was born in Budapest in 1948. After music studies there and in Rome, she joined the Hungarian State Opera as a soloist in 1973. Outside of Hungary, she made guest appearances at opera houses in Vienna, Berlin, Venice, Rome, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Montreal, Boston, and San Francisco. Her festival engagements included Salzburg, Athens, New York, Florence, and Dresden. Her core repertoire was made up of mostly lyric roles — Fiordiligi, Susanna, Countess Almaviva, Zerlina, Donna Elvira, Vitellia, Norma, Amelia Grimaldi, Leonora, Marguerite, Micaela, Mimi, Liu, Nedda, Adriana Lecouvreur, and Cio-Cio San, which became her signature role, THE MUSIC: "Mesdames de la Halle" premiered in Paris in 1858. Like most of Offenbach's works, aside from only a few rare revivals, this opérette bouffe remains an obscurity, despite its delightful music. The farcical plot involves mixed up lovers, secret assignations, and a last-minute surprise parentage reveal of Ciboulette, a plucky orphan who sells vegetables at the Paris market. Ciboulette’s rondo “Je suis la petite fruitiere” serves as her entrance aria. She brags about how her produce is the best at the market, and the tactics she uses to fend off the unwelcome advances of her male customers.
