During the 16th century many German merchants and sailors from Hamburg and Bremen spent their summer in the many trading stations along the extensive coast lines of Iceland and Shetland, and the Faroes were visited too. Merchants from these Hanseatic cities regularly travelled North to exchange goods such as grain / flour, beer, timber and tools for stockfish and other local commodities. The German presence on the islands had a profound impact on these North Atlantic insular societies. This lecture presents the aims and (preliminary) results of two research projects on the Hanseatic League in the North Atlantic. It will present an overview on the history of this trade, and on archaeological works carried out so far.
