In the male, these buds form the prostate gland. In the female, the cranial part of the urethra gives rise to the urethral and paraurethral glands. ANATOMY OF PROSTATE GLAND The prostate is a globular fibromuscular gland that surrounds the prostatic urethra from the bladder base to the membranous urethra. It is about 1.25 inch or 3 cm long. It is surrounded by fibrous capsule. It has a base (lies against the bladder neck above), and an apex (lies against the urogenital diaphragm below). The two ejaculatory ducts coming from the seminal vesicle pierce the upper part of posterior surface of the prostate to open into the prostatic urethra at the lateral margins of the prostatic utricle. The prostate is related to Symphysis pubis anteriorly. It is separated from SP by the extraperitoneal fat in the retropubic space (Cave of Retzius). The prostate is connected to the posterior aspect of the pubic bones by the fascial puboprostatic ligaments. Posteriorly, it is related to the anterior surface of the rectal ampulla and is separated from it by the rectovesical septum (fascia of Denonvilliers). Laterally, lies levator ani muscles.
