On the Gray's Inn Road stands a building formerly owned and run as a hostel by St. Mungo’s, the homelessness charity. It was recently sold to One Housing Group (OHG). OHG never used it for its original purpose and allowed it to stand empty despite the terrible rise in homelessness. It was therefore eventually occupied and run as a shelter by a group called the Autonomous Winter Shelter. They took the step in protest against the austerity measures that enable the continuous neglect of those sleeping rough. They did not want to see vulnerable people freezing to death on the streets. The Shelter continued to provide a safe and warm space for people to stay, create, and take care of themselves and others within a community environment. However, this is a prime bit of real estate and the social housing landlord decided it should not be used for such lowly purposes as sheltering rough sleepers. in April 2022, they evicted all residents of the hostel.
