Vault has always provided means for containerised apps deployed on Kubernetes to consume secrets from Vault via the Vault Agent Injector and Vault CSI provider. Kubernetes also has native secrets that can provide secrets to the apps as environment variables of mounted volumes and many apps expect this. Kubernetes secrets though are not encrypted and doesn't support rotation for short lived dynamic secrets. There was no way to combine the simplicity of kubernetes secrets with the power of central secrets management of HashiCorp Vault. Until now. Enter the Kubernetes Secrets Operator for Vault. The Operator will be able to synchronise static, dynamic, and PKI based secrets from Vault clusters. This will be delivered as a public beta for Vault 1.13.x. I will show the workflow and pattern to use this operator from you app running on Kubernetes. I will show how the operator keeps secrets in sync between Kubernetes and Vault with secrets rotation.
