This is a clip from "Jungle Madness: Part II", the 17th episode from the first season of the 1981-87 NBC cop drama "Hill Street Blues". This episode aired as the two-part season finale on Thursday, May 26, 1981. After finally hitting rock bottom personally and professionally, John D. "J.D." LaRue (Kiel Martin) finally finds the courage to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. After the speaker introduces himself to his fellow alkies, he calls on any new members to speak up. Sheepishly embarrased, J.D. stands up and introduces himself as an alcoholic to everyone. As everyone says hi to him, he hears an eerily familiar voice say "How ya doin', J.D.?". J.D. looks up and over the audience and is surprised to discover that the person speaking to him is none other than his boss, Capt. Frank Furillo (Daniel J. Travanti), who is smiling at him. J.D. is beyond stunned to see that his boss was indeed an alcoholic too. The speaker encourages John to stay. After seeing that his boss understands him like nobody else, he stays. To the viewer, it suddenly becomes clear why Furillo was so personally disgusted by LaRue's drunken antics, as alcohol was what destroyed his marriage. This would become a recurring theme in the series as J.D. slipped up and went back on the bottle in the next season, but got sober and stayed that way. Even Furillo, the station's rock, even slipped up and drank later on in the series, but got sober as well. It should be noted that Daniel J. Travanti and Kiel Martin were both alcoholics in real life themselves, but they got it together.
