“A Letter to my daughter, Wylde”. In this Letter, actor, author and activist Lily Cole speaks to an imagined future, hoping that this vision, and the focus on what we want to see, unlocks the pathway to reach a better destination. As #COP15 unfolds, the fortnight that will pave the reality and future of biodiversity, the Indigenous wisdom of the ‘seven generation principles’, which Lily takes inspiration from, has never felt more urgent. “Many different indigenous communities from around the world talk about the seven generation principles, that we should consider the seven generations behind us and the seven generations ahead as guidance. I’m writing you this Letter as the next generation after me, 2050, when you’ll be my age. But if you were to consider seven generations ahead of you, that would take you roughly to 2300. Just imagine that. Where are we trying to go if our destination is guided by a vision of 2300? Where do we want to go?” Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities represent around 5% of the global population but protect 80% of nature. Indigenous leadership, rights and wisdom are central to efforts to protect biodiversity. A good deal at #COP15 would recognise that those rights and wisdom go hand in hand with protecting nature.
