Nordkirchen castle The castle of Nordkirchen is also known as the “Westphalian Versailles”. The castle was a filming location for various feature films (e.g. Smaragdgrün) and documentaries. The model for the construction was the Palace of Versailles. It is very similar to this in terms of construction and type of park design. After construction work was completed, the castle complex was one of the most famous in Europe. The first moated castle was built by Gerhard III von Morrien at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1694 the property was sold to Prince-Bishop Christian von Plettenberg. He and his family then commissioned the expansion into the baroque palace complex. The family commissioned Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius to carry out the renovations. Pictiórius was later supported by Jacob Roman from Amsterdam. The castle was built in the Baroque architectural style as a three-wing complex. After there were no more male descendants in the Plettenberg family, the castle complex became the property of the Count von Esterházy through a wedding. The Esterházy family sold the property to Duke Engelbert-Maria von Arenberg. In 1949 the von Arenberg family no longer used the property, for this reason the state of North Rhine-Westphalia rented and later bought the property and extensively restored the entire facility. The size of the castle park is 172 hectares, of which 110 hectares are a nature reserve. The castle is now the headquarters of the North Rhine-Westphalia University of Applied Sciences for Finance. It has been declared worthy of protection by UNESCO as a “complete work of art of international standing”. ____________________________________________ Senden maoted castle The Senden manor was owned by the von Senden family under the name Benekamp. The manor house was built in the Middle Ages with a three-tiered gable and is probably the oldest architectural monument of this type and a model for buildings of the Westphalian Renaissance. The castle was occupied and partially looted by British soldiers after the Second World War. In 1957 the baronial Droste family in Senden sold it. The people who purchased the castle first ran a commercial school, then a retirement home and, from the 1980s to the 1990s, a hotel. In 2015, the palace complex was taken over by the non-profit association Schloss Senden e.V. and is becoming a cultural and educational location. ____________________________________________ Venner Moor The Venner Moor is an ancient raised moor near the town of Venne, located directly on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The moor covers an area of 148 hectares. The protected area is developed with cycling and hiking trails. This rain bog was largely peated. Threatened animal species are native to the area, such as the mole cricket and various species of dragonflies such as the peat mosaic damsel. The area is known for the high population of adders, a poisonous but shy native snake species. The novels “The Moor King” and “The Return of the Moor King” have their origins in the Venner Moor.
