NOTE FROM TED: This talk discusses self-harm associated with schizophrenia which some may find upsetting. Please do not look to this talk as a substitute for mental health advice and seek professional help if you are struggling. Always consult a medical professional before modifying medication or treatment plans. This talk only represents the speaker’s personal views and understanding of wellness, lifestyle, and healing. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... After another hospitalization in 2016, I got serious about my recovery journey, and I decided that my life would have to drastically change for me to find holistic wellness. I found a few things to be true: 1. We must radicalize our self-care. 2. We must prioritize community care as well (we do not heal alone or in a bubble). 3. Moving through our journey is not so much about how you feel as it is about what we do to help ourselves find wellness. 4. Peer Support and telling our stories give us hope and empowerment to move forward. For all those who struggle with serious mental health conditions, I see you. I hear you. And I got you. We all need to find ways to thrive, not just survive, with our illness. The voices in our heads have not been silenced, but our collective voice has. We are told that we will never recover. We are told to just accept life as it is. We are marginalized and tucked away in society. However, we do have a voice to tell our story. Our stories hold magic when they are told in safe spaces. They have the power to ignite a flicker of hope that not only the individual can see, but that everyone around them can as well. We can have lives where we find hope and peace, living without the stigma and shame that has been cast on us for years. Tara is a person who lives and thrives with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. After living with it for over 30 years, she’s sharing some insights about what helped her go from surviving to thriving. Getting real about recovery and taking self-care on a radical journey of wellness has helped. Listen as she talks about where she was to where she is today. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
