In this didactic lecture, we cover statistical methods for comparing rates and time-to-event outcomes, with a focus on applications in epidemiology and clinical research. Topics include: Poisson regression for count data Using offsets to model rates and person-time Interpretation of rate ratios Core concepts in survival analysis (time origin, censoring, immortal person-time) Kaplan–Meier survival curves and median survival Comparing survival curves using the log-rank test Cox proportional hazards models and interpretation of hazard ratios Understanding and assessing the proportional hazards assumption The lecture emphasizes conceptual understanding, interpretation, and appropriate method selection, with examples drawn from medical and public health research.
