In this video, we take a self-guided tour through the massive iron-making complex that operated from 1882 to 1971, learning how blast furnaces produced pig iron using iron ore, coke, limestone, and superheated air reaching nearly 3,800°F. Along the way we check out the visitor center exhibits, towering steam-powered blowing engines, boiler systems, casting sheds, and the enormous industrial machinery that powered Birmingham’s steel industry. Today the site has been preserved as a National Historic Landmark and even hosts a world-renowned metal arts program, making it one of the most unique industrial history sites in the American South. Join me as we explore the huge structures, the science of ironmaking, and the fascinating history behind this iconic Birmingham landmark.
