Erected by the living but (more often than not) paid for by the dead ; the more grandiose the memorial, the greater was the wealth & ego of the departed. But all memory eventually fades, the graves become overgrown, the names erode through the weathering of the years, the statues lose their limbs and the crosses collapse to rubble.
