Wine Review: Cloudy Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2020 - Marlborough's Iconic Sauvignon Blanc

For today's tasting chilled Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc seemed just the thing to review on a warm sunny day in the New Zealand summer. Following on from my recent tasting of their Pinot Noir I thought I would look at Cloudy Bay's Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The vintage tasted was 2020. I ask whether Cloudy Bay, the producer that first defined this style, still justifies its iconic status. My conclusions are that Cloudy Bay retains an extra dimension that pushes it qualitatively above most other Sauvignon Blancs from the region. The wine's concentration, pungency, complexity and age-worthiness Are indeed factors that make a premium price justifiable for the wine. Cloudy Bay are one of the most famous producers of the Marlborough wine region at the north of New Zealand's on the South Island. The company was established in 1985 as one of the earlier producers of Marlborough wines and today, their flagship Sauvignon Blanc is one of the country's most highly sought-after wines. The winery has multiple vineyards in the Wairau Valley and Southern Valleys sub regions of Marlborough, as well as an additional estate and cellar door in Central Otago. Marlborough has a strong maritime climate with some of the longest sunshine hours of anywhere in the country, ideal for ripening grapes with concentrated flavor compounds. The estate was started in 1985 by David Hohnen, the founder of Cape Mentelle Vineyards in Western Australia's Margaret River wine region. Hohnen sold a stake in Cloudy Bay to Veuve Clicquot in 1990. In 2003, Veuve Clicquot purchased the company outright, bringing it into the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) multinational luxury goods group.
