Presentation by Dr. Jude Spiers from the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta. This presentation is part of the webinar series on qualitative methodology co-sponsored by the Institute for Qualitative Methodology (IIQM) and ATLAS.ti. Download Power Point presentations and see webinar calendar here: http://www.iiqm.ualberta.ca/ResearchT... Abstract: Rigor is fundamental to qualitative research and everyone agrees with this. However, over the past two decades there has been lively debate about the principles, terms and approaches to ensuring rigor yet there is still no consensus. One perspective that is clearly emerging as particularly useful and practical is how researchers can iteratively, during the conduct of the inquiry, check, refine and redirect their research processes so that incrementally, the research is self-correcting, thus resulting in a rigorous result. In this webinar, we will discuss how different models of rigor fit theoretically and philosophically in different approaches to qualitative research, and how researchers can employ a variety of verification strategies to continually self-correct during the research process. The original verification article by Morse, Barrett, Mayan, Olson and Spiers, published in 2002 has now been cited over 2000 times. We will discuss the continuing controversies outlined in that article and how verification strategies can be implemented in a range of designs. Visit the
