Market Gardening à la Fortier: Biointensive Farming vs. Drought

Thanks to the market gardening techniques of Jean-Martin Fortier (@TheMarketGardeners) and additional training from Sylvain Couderc, there’s a little vegetable farm in Provence that achieves stable yields despite the region’s extreme droughts and recurrent floods. Luc Sommer (Graine de Jardin), who started out as a small-scale market gardener in the Var department two years ago, takes me on a tour of his highly productive, biointensive micro-farm. Under the scorching Mediterranean sun, he shows me the key principles of Fortier’s method, the now world-famous “Market Gardener” from Quebec, Canada. How does his method apply to Luc’s reality in the south of France, over 5,000 kilometres and a few climate zones away? And how does it help conserve the most precious resource in summertime Provence – water? I told you about Luc's crowdfunding campaign on Instagram – he wanted to equip his new polytunnel with an irrigation system. We’re installing it together in this video. Luc’s fruit and vegetables, grown on almost 1,800 square metres of permanent raised beds, feed 100 to 200 people each week and stock the canteen of his local town, Carcès, as well as some restaurants in the area.
