The fish that kicked my ass 😂 Use code EJC for 10% off all Torelli Dive Gear 🙂 Last year I was invited out by the spearfishing legend, Rob Torelli to come out with him and film him attempting to shoot a giant Southern Bluefin Tuna aka a barrel! I knew Rob at the time had been out on a few missions chasing them but was yet to have any luck finding them. So, I honestly wasn’t expecting too much and the last thing I was expecting was to shoot one myself… I learnt so much from this day and looking back I wish I had done a few things differently. The first is the shot I took. I wish I had taken more time rather than simply shooting the fish that first presented, but with the circumstances that was going on at the time it’s understandable why I did what I did. But looking back at the footage you can see at least another dozen barrels in the background and some could have possibly been the new Australian record. Hence why both Rob and I landed the fish unassisted as we didn’t know if they were going to be record breaking fish. Another thing I would do differently next time is letting the float do more of the work rather than trying to fight it from the start as it was just a lost cause and I wasted so much of my energy trying to pull it up. I was fighting it more like a dog tooth tuna that was trying to reef me 😅 And lastly I wish I had slowed down more and enjoyed the moment. I felt it was all just go go go and as you would’ve seen and I was exhausted at the end and couldn’t even process what just happened. With all this being said it’s all part of the learning journey and no doubt will I be ready for the next big fish that comes my way! To this day I still can’t believe all this happened, it doesn’t even feel real yet, but I can’t thank Rob enough for giving me this opportunity, none of this would have been possible without him. To witness Rob first hand in action single handedly take down a beast to then have the opportunity to do it myself is something special. Thanks to Brad and Harry for coming along as well, landing a fish like this is all a team effort and I was just the one fortunate enough to pull the trigger. None of these beautiful fish went to waste and it was all eaten and shared with our family and friends.
