Unlike many captive-born orcas, she spent nine years with her mother, Sharkane, but suffered due to inadequate nutrition and stunted physical development. Frustration led to aggressive behavior, including injuring trainers and attempting to pull one into the pool. Boredom drove her to bite off pieces of concrete, severely damaging her teeth. Family separation compounded her struggles—her older sister was transferred to SeaWorld, and her parents passed away. Shouka’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by captive marine mammals.
