For more information, coaching, live and online classes, go to: www.inalignedmovement.com When you approach an exercise, if you ask yourself what is your intention, you add a deeper spiritual/psychological element to it. If you are trying to "be the best", impress somebody, conquer your body, etc. you may be working with your body from an ego sense. Unfortunately, moving from the ego can keep you unaware of your body as it is and in some circumstances can lead to injury. But if you know your alignment you can gain a deeper awareness of what is happening in your body in this present moment, and you may establish a better relationship with yourself, your intentions, and your ego. For example, when doing a hamstring strap stretch, you might approach it by trying to get your leg all the way over your head. However, for most of us, that isn't possible without tucking the pelvis and flexing the spine. Consequently, the stretch doesn't really create the most change of the hamstring that way. But if you check in with your intention and if your intention is to effect the greatest change for your leg in that moment, and you are aware of your alignment, then you're stretch may look a lot different. Watch that you don't pull your leg farther than when you begin to feel the sensation of stretch and don't allow your pelvis to tilt backwards. In that case you may not even get your leg as high as 90 degrees. Then you have an opportunity to accept the present moment and work with your ego, which may wish or even demand your body be doing something else. And letting the ego go to be where you are, in fact, is where physiologically, your muscles will see the most desired change. I suggest you try this "checking in" with your intention and learning awareness of alignment in all your exercises.
