Whether you’re trying to decide which shrimp is the better fit for your planted tank, or you’re wondering if they can live together, this video covers it all. 🌿 Both species bring unique strengths to the table—Cherry Shrimp with their stunning variety of colors and easy breeding, and Amano Shrimp with their unmatched algae-eating abilities and larger size. By the end of this video, you’ll have a much clearer idea of which shrimp is right for your tank—or whether a combination of both might be the perfect solution, like it is in many of my aquariums. 🧬 Appearance & Size Cherry Shrimp are colorful, vibrant, and available in a variety of morphs like Bloody Mary, Yellow, Orange, Blue Jelly, and more. Amano Shrimp, on the other hand, are larger and more translucent, which makes them less visually striking—but much more practical, especially for tanks with fish that may nip at or eat smaller shrimp. 🤝 Behavior & Personality Both shrimp are peaceful and spend most of their time foraging. Amanos are a little more reclusive and tend to group together in shaded or hidden areas, while Cherry Shrimp are usually out and about during the day, grazing on plants and hardscape. Occasionally, Amanos may outcompete smaller shrimp at feeding time, but conflict is rare. 🐠 Tank Mates & Compatibility Thanks to their size, Amano Shrimp can live with a slightly wider range of fish, but both species do best with peaceful community fish like tetras, rasboras, danios, corydoras, and livebearers. I’ve personally kept them with bettas and honey gourami without issues—though results can vary by individual fish. 🏗️ Tank Setup Tips Whether you choose Amanos, Cherry Shrimp, or both, a well-planted tank with hiding spots is key. I’ve had great success using lava rock, Seiryu stone, driftwood, and live plants. Both species thrive in tanks using aquasoil like Fluval Stratum, despite concerns about pH—I've never had problems, even in my soft water setup. 💧 Water Parameters Both Amanos and Neocaridina thrive in similar conditions. A pH between 6.4–8.0, kH between 3–10, and gH between 4–10 is a great range for keeping both species healthy. I recommend basic remineralization if your water is very soft, especially if you're seeing issues with molting or poor breeding results. 🍽️ Feeding Amano Shrimp are true workhorses when it comes to algae control. They tackle a wide range of algae types and consume more due to their size. Cherry Shrimp also graze on algae and biofilm, and in larger colonies, they’re excellent cleanup crews too. Both enjoy supplemental foods like algae wafers, Fluval Bug Bites, sinking pellets, and natural treats like blanched spinach and mulberry leaves. 🐣 Breeding Cherry Shrimp are incredibly easy to breed in freshwater. Amano Shrimp will breed, but their larvae require brackish water to survive—so they don’t reproduce in most home aquariums. If you're interested in growing a colony, Neocaridina are definitely the better choice for beginners and hobby breeders. 💰 Cost & Availability Neocaridina shrimp are generally more affordable due to ease of breeding and high availability in a wide range of colors. Amano Shrimp tend to be more expensive, especially in regions where they must be imported or are wild-caught. High-grade Cherry Shrimp can approach Amano prices, but lower grades remain a budget-friendly option. 🧠 Final Thoughts If you’re dealing with a serious algae problem or want a low-maintenance helper in your tank, Amano Shrimp are a great choice. If aesthetics and breeding potential are more important to you, Cherry Shrimp are the way to go. Personally, I keep both!
