Primary Lymphoedema, in which the cause is unknown, is thought to be caused by congenital lymphatic dysplasia. It is classified on the basis of genetic susceptibility, age of onset, and lymphangio-graphic classification. Secondary Lymphoedema is the most common form of lymphoedema. There are several causes including Infection, Inflammation, Neoplasia and trauma. Classification of causes is also categorized into malignant disease, Endocrine Disorders, Venous Disorders. Lymphatic Filariasis is the most common cause of lymphoedema worldwide. The disease is associated with poor sanitation. The clinical features of acute filariasis include headache, malaise, lymphangitis. Endemic elephantiasis which is also known as podoconiosis arises when the barefoot cultivation of soil composed of alkaline volcanic rocks leads to the destruction of the peripheral lymphatics by particles of silica, which can be seen in macrophages in draining lymph nodes. The conditions mimicking Lymphoedema are also made easy to understand for medical students. The distinguishing features of lipoedema are discussed at the end of the lecture. ------------------------------------------------------------- 1300+ Medical Courses Lectures.
