It is located in the Seralcadio, a historic district whose history dates back to the Muslim era. The market extends along several historic streets: Via Carini, Via Beati Paoli, Via di San Agostino and Via Cappuccinelle. The market has long been famous for its meat trade. This heritage dates back to the times when a “bocceria nuova” (new slaughterhouse) specializing in the slaughter of goats and other animals operated nearby. The area is still home to many “carnezzerie” (a dialectal name from the Spanish era) rather than traditional butchers’ shops. In recent years, the Mercato del Capo has undergone some changes. It was once primarily a local fresh produce market, but now many of the traditional fruit, vegetable and fresh fish stalls have given way to offerings aimed at tourists. The market has evolved to cater to visitors, with vendors now focusing on street food and souvenirs. While traditional Sicilian products such as spices, sun-dried tomatoes and pasta are still available, they are increasingly sold in vacuum-packed packaging designed for the convenience of tourists, rather than in the traditional loose format once available to local shoppers. However, the market is still worth a visit for its authentic Sicilian atmosphere. The layout of the market, with its labyrinthine streets, retains the atmosphere of an oriental bazaar. The market’s character as the hub of Palermo’s trade remains intact, combining historical traditions with a vibrant street life. It’s a great place to sample the city’s famous street food.
