2/27/26 SSL 1660 + Zerosum Inertia 6550-99 + MOTM Utility Strip + Alesis MIDIVERB II + CXM 1978 Someone was selling their MOTM system and we got the Utility Strip, with multiples and reversible attenuators. This was a first test. The interest in 5U (as opposed to 3U) is largely in the interfaces of the modules, which take good advantage of the size of the format. The Synthetic Sound Labs 1660 The Matrix Algorithmic Composer is a great example, being a completely different module in 5U than in 3U. Another great example is the Zerosum Inertia 6550-99, which is not available in 3U. The enormous tube would probably be ridiculous on a 3U module. We’ve been trying to reduce the redundancy across formats and get our 5U system down to modules that are not available in 3U, or modules that are superior in 5U. This rack is as compressed as that gets, with just two SSL 1660 modules and two ZI 6550-99 thyratrons. The ZI 6550-99 modules track the SSL 1660 square wave audio outputs, aided by the MOTM Utility Strip. The reversible attenuators have kill switches, and I tried using that to shift the pitch of the sequence. Reversed reverb from the Alesis MIDIVERB II and stereo reverb blended on the CXM 1978.
