I struggle with patience on a daily basis. I don’t like sitting still or holding onto one emotion, even digging into one long note makes me uncomfortable. I'm eager to move on, to cross things off my to-list as fast as possible and start new projects. That’s why sometimes I get the feeling I’m moving a million miles a minute but not getting anywhere. I've had The Alabama Shakes on my #PlayYourParagon list for a long time, I was hooked on Brittany Howard the first time I heard her voice rip into the intro of "Don't Wanna Fight". She's not afraid to build anticipation with a long breath, a twisted note, or a steady guitar chug. When Brittany was a child her older sister died from retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer. Brittany had the same condition but survived, partially blind in one eye. Her family grew up without a lot of money so she had to get creative to entertain herself, writing poems, playing piano, starting a band. She worked for the USPS and music was her catharsis. I heard in an interview that the first time the Alabama Shakes played this song live, the audience started singing along on the chorus, mistaking it for a cover tune since it felt so familiar. I imagine the whole crowd at the deli they were playing at hushing and gently humming "hold on". I shied away from this song at first. Simple songs have nothing to hide behind. But I am learning to appreciate creativity within constraint. This song never deviates from one chord but it's impactful. I love Brittany's ability to build anticipation and hope with her honesty. When she belts "yeah you gotta wait/I don't wanna wait" - it's a reminder that I needed to be patient. And that's why we decided to cover "Hold On" this week. -Katie About #PlayYourParagon: If you see it, you believe it, you do it. This year we want to be the "see it", that encourages the "believe it" that supports the "do it". When we were in high school a female string duo called Moxie Strings came into our classroom and rocked out on their electric cello and violin and Katie and I decided "we can do that?!" That is how we became the Accidentals, which in turn altered every part of our lives. It gave a couple of shy kids the confidence to create and relate. Every week we choose a songwriter, musician or female fronted band that inspires us. Audio mixed by Michael Dause.
