In the bones, metastatic breast cancer is called bone metastasis, or bone mets. The bones are the most common place for breast cancer to spread. In this session, Carmen Bergom, MD, PhD, and Katherine N. Weilbaecher, MD, share more about treatment options and strategies to limit side effects, manage bone pain, and maintain bone strength. They also discuss how to understand screening tests and share updates on clinical trials studying new treatments and quality of life. About our speakers: Carmen Bergom, MD, PhD, is an associate professor in radiation oncology at Washington University in St. Louis. She treats breast cancer patients one day per week, and she also leads a translational research laboratory focusing on identifying targets to enhance tumor radiosensitivity and minimize treatment toxicity in breast cancer. Langenberg Distinguished Professor for the division of oncology at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Weilbaecher serves as co-director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center and is a practicing breast cancer medical oncologist and her laboratory research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of tumor cell metastasis to bone.
