Pain is multifactorial, it is influenced by countless factors that can be biological, psychological, social, or other. A biopsychosocial model of health care and low back pain rehab is needed to address the complex web of causative factors that modulate pain. Unfortunately, physical therapists, chiropractors, personal trainers, and even yoga teachers have recently become obsessed with pain science. Pain science education is wonderful at helping us all to be less fearful and decrease kinesiophobia and fear-avoidance. Pain science education helps us communicate with better language so that we avoid nocebic narratives surrounding pain and exercise. However, it also tends to leave people with the false impression that pain is in the brain and therefore biomechanics don't matter, that form and exercise technique doesn't matter, and that alignment doesn't matter. This is an extreme viewpoint that simply isn't supported by current scientific literature. THERE IS NO ROOT CAUSE OF PAIN! . . There are many contributing factors to low back pain, including physical and biomechanical stress on joints, muscles, and the spine, but also our mindset, environment, and expectations can influence pain. There is no root cause of pain. . .
