(6 Dec 2017) LEADIN An exhibition showcasing works of surrealist artist Yves Tanguy has opened in Berlin. The French painter and printmaker is considered one of the early pioneers of the surrealist movement. STORYLINE The "Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg" museum in Berlin has been taken over by paintings and prints made by a French surrealist artist. The exhibition - called "In the Realm of the Mistletoe Druids: The Graphic Work of Yves Tanguy" - shows works by Tanguy - considered an early pioneer of the surrealist movement. Tanguy was a follower, and collaborator, of André Breton - the writer of the surrealist manifesto and widely considered the father of surrealism. "Tanguy is one of the most important followers of surrealism," says Kyllikki Zacharias, the curator of exhibition "For a quarter of a century, he was a close collaborator of André Breton - the founder of surrealism." "In comparison to someone like Salvador Dali he really represents the more abstract part of surrealism while Dali represents the more figurative part of the surrealist movement." Tanguy was born in Paris in 1900, the youngest of four children. His father died when Tanguy was eight-years-old. He did not train as an artist or painter, instead, he took up painting as an adult after returning to Paris after working as a merchant sailor. In 1926 he met Andre Breton and the two became friends and collaborators. The exhibition showcases paintings and prints by Tanguy, but also notes, letters, and photographs that give an insight into the life of the artist. "Real connoisseurs will enjoy this exhibition. They will be excited to see a lot of rare documents, photographs and works that you would normally very rarely see," says Zacharias. "But it is also an exhibition for people that really don't know anything about this artist. There are commentary and explanations in the exhibition so people can move through the exhibition and understand what it is about and discover a lot. It is really a very entertaining exhibition." Many of the works come from the private collection of Heinz Joachim Kummer, a Cologne-based lawyer, and art collector. The prints and paintings that he has lent to the museum usually hang on the walls in his house. Other works come from the collection of Wolfgang Wittrock, a Berlin-based collector and curator. "There are different types of collectors. There are many collectors that see art as an investment. And it is not rare that enormous treasures are held in safes and never seen by anyone, not even the collector," says Kummer. "The two of us have a different approach, because we know what the art gives us. That's why we are happy when we can reach other people. And if the art moves them, then that's a big gain." The exhibition "In the Realm of the Mistletoe Druids: The Graphic Work of Yves Tanguy" opens to the public on December 8 and runs through April 8, 2018.
