Pakistan has finally sold a majority stake in its national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), after decades of losses, corruption allegations and repeated taxpayer-funded bailouts. A Pakistani consortium led by Arif Habib has reportedly acquired around 75% of the airline for about Rs 135 billion, in a televised bidding process held in Islamabad as part of IMF-backed privatisation reforms. Supporters claim the deal is the only way to rescue PIA from crippling debt and mismanagement, pointing to conditions in Pakistan’s 7 billion dollar IMF programme that demanded loss-making state enterprises be privatised.
