Investigating outcomes is an essential practice for increasing organizational learning. However, many investigation reports read like an action sequence from a Michael Bay movie starring clueless workers and bad decisions, instead of the dramatic tales filled with rich context, contributing factors, and organizational issues that they are. In this presentation, we will examine how storytelling can mitigate bias, increase empathy, and support organizational learning. About the Presenter: Jennifer Serne is the program coordinator and a professor of Safety Health Management at Central Washington University. In addition to over 20 years of experience as a safety professional, she has worked as an independent fatality investigator for various clients and industries in 36 states and 6 countries. Her education includes a Masters in Safety Science and a Ph.D. in Industrial Organizational Psychology.
