Dredging is an important process in the maintenance and health of waterways and assorted bodies of water. Over time, the water in lakes, rivers, harbors, ponds and elsewhere deposits sand, silt and other debris during sedimentation. This can cause waterways to become too shallow to allow commercial and recreational marine traffic to pass, and it can choke off needed nutrients and oxygen from ecosystems — with detrimental results for aquatic wildlife and native plants. To combat the effects of sedimentation — as well as the accumulation of hazardous materials in certain instances — dredging actively excavates unwanted sediment and debris from bodies of water and transports the material to a different location. So much of the water around us is used for the transport of goods, recreational purposes, and the habitat of fish and other aquatic life. Therefore, dredging serves to help keep everything from commercial waterways and canals navigable to ponds and shorelines healthy and attractive.
