Recently, a shocking report revealed that the homeless population in China had surged to 24 million, an increase of 5.3 times in just five years. This number is greater than the population of many countries. Over 60% of the homeless are under 33 years old, including many former white-collar workers, migrant workers, and middle-class families who, after bankruptcy, now live on the streets, sometimes scavenging for food. As China’s most economically vibrant first-tier cities, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou attract a large floating population but have also become hotspots for homelessness. Many of these people seek shelter under bridges, at subway entrances, or in corners of fast-food restaurants. However, in China, the government often drives homeless people away to maintain the city’s image, using city management officers and police forces.
