Bengaluru is a tranquil city in the entire universe. There is a kind of attraction in the very name ‘Bengaluru’ This city – with a unique aura and a magnetic element - has that incredible capacity to attract all kinds of people not only from other parts of the country but also from across the globe. The city is simply beautiful. The population of the city is increasing day by day due to abundant employment opportunity, excellent educational systems and institutions and environment-friendly atmosphere. The population of the city in 1990 was 40 lakhs; in 2021, the population went up to 123lakhs, a whopping increase by 307 per cent! If this is one kind of problem on one hand, the steep increase in the quantum of rainfall has become another problem. The average rainfall of Bengaluru city is 980 MM. However, the quantum of rainfall in Bengaluru in 2020 was high by 22.45 per cent. In the corresponding period in 2021, the quantum of rainfall was 74.08 per cent. The increase in the population and vagaries of monsoon with very steep increase in the rainfall has had severe adverse effect on Bengaluru city. Unexpected flash flood situation and excessive traffic congestion have been affecting the city. But the state government is all set and prepared to face the challenges through the effective and efficient institutionalized mechanism, namely the Bruhath Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). By taking up unique projects, the BBMP has triggered developmental revolution in Bengaluru city. Modernisation of Raja Kaluve (Main Storm Water Drain) The drastic changes in the global climatic conditions have had its adverse effect on Bengaluru city also in the form of flash floods. The city is witnessing flood-like situation due to unprecedented rains. Having realized this, the BBMP has been taking all the necessary steps to strengthen the retaining walls of the Storm Water Drains (Raja Kaluve). Additionally, in the current year the encroachments on 152 storm water drain have been cleared off. By taking such steps, the BBMP is all set and prepared to prevent flood-like situation during the next year. One among many unique projects being undertaken is the clearing of the Water Route – K 100 – from City Market till Bellandur lake. Optimum utilization of the waste: The problem of solid waste is a big challenge to a city like Bengaluru which is growing exponentially. The BBMP has been facing this challenge effectively and efficiently. Our ‘pourakarmikas’ arrive at the dawn like ‘disciplined soldiers’at the door-steps and segregate the waste. They also speak to the people and create awareness about the need to segregate the waste as ‘dry and wet waste.’ The government’s vision to utilize the waste is laudable. The waste is put though the processing unit and disposed off scientifically. The waste is also used for manufacturing fertilizers and in collaboration with the KPTCL there is a proposal to produce electricity out of this waste. The traffic now has a way! With the phenomenal increase in the population, the number of vehicles has also grown exponentially. This has, naturally, led to the problem of traffic jams. However, the state government and the BBMP have been jointly handling this problem in an efficient manner. Setting up signal-free corridor is one of the methodologies adopted to avoid traffic jams in main roads. We have also undertaken construction of under-passes, flyovers and widening roads as solution to the growing problem of traffic. The two-way traffic is being encouraged by constructing flyovers. By doing this, we have been able to reduce air pollution to considerable extent. White topping roads are being laid to ensure durability as well as good quality of the roads. Pot holes are being filled up on war-footing in such way that it stands the test of time. Along with the main roads, the ward roads are being developed and encroachments are being removed. Bengaluru is a tranquil city in the entire universe. Bruhath Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has triggered developmental revolution in namma Bengaluru city. #TransformingBengaluru #BBMPCares
