THE TALKING POINTS Episode 1 The Handmaiden of Faith: Science and Religion in the Medieval World Hello everyone, and welcome to our roundtable discussion. For today’s podcast episode, we're delving into an interesting and intriguing historical question: To what extent did religious institutions accelerate or stifle scientific progress in the medieval age? Most of the time, the medieval period is also referred to as the “Dark Age," especially the early part, because during this period the church or religion was viewed to have a dominant and central role in the European community and had great influence in every aspect of life, politics, and culture. Because of this, it was also implied that religion played a significant factor in restraining scientific inquiry. More historians, however, argue that there was a much more complex relationship between religion and science. Aside from influencing spiritual life, religious organizations funded numerous academics, maintained ancient knowledge, and controlled education. So, were they gatekeepers of scientific information, guardians of knowledge, or both?
