(5 Nov 1998) Natural Sound The Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Drnovsek, has been lobbying Washington for admittance to NATO in the next phase of enlargement. President Bill Clinton assured the visiting Balkan delegation that NATO would remain open to adding more members once Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic join next year. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright gave them further encouragement by supporting an anti-landmine initiative the Slovenian government has been pushing . NATO was not the only matter on the Slovenian Prime Minister's agenda during his visit to the US capital. In a meeting with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Drnovsek also pushed a project spear-headed by the Slovene International Trust Fund for Mine Clearance and Assistance to Mine Victims in Bosnia Herzegovina and other Landmine-Affected Countries in the Region. The purpose of the fund is to promote de-mining and assist landmine victims. In May, the U.S. Congress appropriated 28 million dollars for the Trust.
