The ones at the back of the tongue are called Lingual Tonsils (Lingual= Tongue). These are different from the normal tonsils which are seen on either side of the throat and are called the Palatine Tonsils. The Common Symptoms of Lingual Tonsil Enlargement are sore throat something stuck in the throat difficulty in swallowing sometimes there may be intense pain in case the Lingual Tonsils get infected. rarely an abscess can also form Enlargement of the Lingual Tonsils is fairly common and is commonly caused by exposure to allergens/ irritants in the throat - this could be either inhaled or swallowed. Spicy and fried food are common causative agents. Peri and Post menopausal women also sometimes get it. The Diagnosis is usually made by your ENT Specialist after performing an OPD procedure called Laryngoscopy. The treatment consists of Avoidance of agents that cause the problem - especially spicy food Medications like anti allergic, anti-inflammatory. Sometimes an antibiotic may be required in the presence of a bacterial infection Surgery - including Laser Ablation my rarely be needed- this not only gets rid of the throat problem but also assists in reducing Snoring. Signs of a Serious Condition - If you have persistent deep-seated pain in the throat, sometimes difficulty in swallowing, blood-stained oral discharge, pain radiating to the ear, same sided neck swelling then you must have yourself evaluated at the earliest. This could be a sign of Cancer Base of the Tongue and this is more common in persons who smoke, use oral Tobacco, and consume alcohol as well.
