The Mahar Regiment was raised on 01 October 1941 as a regiment of the Infantry Arm of the Indian Army while the World War II was its peak. The battalions of the Mahar Regiment were involved in various battles immediately after the raising. Since Independence, the Mahar battalions have been involved in all wars and all kinds of operational involvements and have always done the Indian Army and country proud. The strength of the internal fiber of the Army on the whole and regiments in specific is derived from the rich martial history, which the future generations imbibe and are proud to follow in times to come. In Seventy Five years, the Mahar Regiment has acquired an identity, character and ethos of its own. To commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the existence of the regiment, it was envisioned by Maj Gen Manoj Oka, the Colonel of the Mahar Regiment, the father figure of the regiment, to present a new regimental song and martial tune for the gallant posterity to draw inspiration from. The composition named ‘Shankhnaad’ composed by Dr Tanuja Nafde was dedicated to the Mahar Faternity in a graceful function during the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations held in the Mahar Regiment Centre, Sagar in Madhya Pradesh in its dignified Officers’ Mess Arena on 05 November 2016. The audience of 1000 discerning and perceptive soldier-leaders, their families and other distinguished guests comprised the senior most present Mahar Veteran Lt Gen BC Nanda, PVSM, who was the GOC-in-C, Northern Command at Udhampur during the period 1988-90 along with his gracious wife. There were Lt Gen YK Wadhera, PVSM, the erstwhile Director General Infantry with his lady wife, erstwhile colonels of the regiment, many serving retired generals and officers of the subordinate ranks and their wives, most of whom have contributed to the various battles that the regiment has fought and excelled in. The regiment was proud of having amidst them a British Indian Army Officer, Lt Mackintosh, a sprightly 94 year old veteran who was part of the Regiment in 1942-43 and who had travelled all the way from England alone for the occasion. The oldest person was Col KS Bakhshi, who had been the Commandant, the Mahar Regiment Centre for seven years from 1969-76, and is considered as an icon by the Regiment. Then there were many officers and ladies from the sister units and headquarters based in Sagar. All in all, a very graceful and rich audience! The rendition of ‘Shankhnaad’ by the Military Band of the Mahar Regiment was given a standing ovation by all in the audience. The feedback from all the quarters was as soul touching as the audience had found the composition to be!
