President Donald Trump shared with GOP lawmakers that it was no surprise that Republicans lost big on Tuesday's election, pointing to two major factors that he believed helped Democrats win. "I think, if you read the pollsters, the shutdown was a big factor," Trump shared during the Wednesday morning breakfast. "Negative for the Republicans, and that was a big factor." Just days before the elections in Virginia, New Jersey, New York City, and California, a NBC News poll revealed that 52% of voters blamed Trump and Republicans for the now longest ever government shutdown and 42% blamed Democrats. Trump also suggested that the fact that he wasn't on the ballot may have negatively impacted government turnout. "And they say that I wasn't on the ballot and was the biggest factor," Trump said. "But I don't know about that. But I was honored that they said that.” While Trump endorsed New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli; he never made campaigned for him in New Jersey. Meanwhile, prominent Democrats like former President Barrack Obama joined New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill for a rally just days before the election. In Virginia, Trump never explicitly endorsed Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears for governor, who lost to former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger. California also successfully passed Prop 50, allowing the state to redraw its Congressional map to add five additional seats for Democrats. The redistricting effort was prompted to counter Texas' newly drawn map.
